Sew up some fleece mitts to keep your
paws warm in the winter months. Using contrasting thread and a zig-zag
stitch for a fun look. This project is a great beginner project and takes
little fabric!
MATERIALS NEEDED:
-
1/4 yd. of fleece fabric
-
2/3 yd. of 3/4" wide braided elastic
-
Fiskar rotary cutter
-
Fiskar wave or pinking blade
-
Sew Fit rotary cutting mat
-
matching or contrasting sewing thread
-
bodkin or safety pin
-
Fiskar scissors
-
paper scissors
-
tape measure
-
1 piece of notebook or typing paper
-
pencil
-
sewing gauge
-
fabric pins (optional)
**A pair of pinking shears may be substituted
for the rotary cutting tools.
CUTTING:
On
a flat surface, lay your hand on top of a piece of paper. With a pencil,
trace around the outside of your hand. Extend a line from your pinky knuckle
up to your wrist. On the other side of your hand, extend a line from your
thumb knuckle to your wrist. Draw a line where your wrist is.
Lift
up your hand. From your wrist line, add 3" making a cuff line. Using a
sewing gauge, add 3/4" to the outside of your tracing. Cut out the pattern
you created.
Cut 4 mitt pieces from your fabric
using a rotary cutter with a decorative cutting blade or a pair of pinking
shears. Hint: cut only 2 layers at a time.
QUICK CONSTRUCTION:
Thread your sewing machine with utility
sewing thread. Contrasting thread could be used for a decorative effect.
For example, the gray mitts were sewn with red thread. The stitching was
even more visible because a zig-zag stitch was used. Be creative and use
your choice of stitch and colorful thread!
*Remember, if using pins, remove them
before sewing over them.

Place 2 mitt pieces right
sides together. Place the edge of the presser foot next to the cut edge
of the fabric. Beginning at the wrist, sew around the outside edge of the
mitt. Repeat for second mitt. Remember to backstitch when you begin and
end of the seam. |

Use the tape measure to
measure around your wrist. Add to your wrist measurement 1", then cut two
lengths of elastic using that total. |
|
| 3 |
 |
Turn down 1 1/4" for the
cuff, pin. Sew around the cuff with the edge of the presser foot next to
the cut edge. Leave 1 1/2" open. Repeat for other mitt. |

Attach the bodkin or a
safety pin to one end of the elastic. Pull the elastic through the cuff
casing. Be careful not to pull the other end through the casing! Once elastic
is inserted, lap one of the elastic's cut edges over the other. To secure
the elastic, sew through the width of elastic. Repeat for other mitt. |
|

|
Draw elastic into the casing
by stretching the cuff. Sew the opening closed. Repeat for other mitt.
ENJOY!
